The Minnesota SkyVault Theatre Company presented a dramatized, staged radio play of the 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast. Including a "broadcast" on Halloween, the 76th anniversary of Orson Welles' report from New York City's Mercury Theater.
THE BACKSTORY: War of the Worlds, a science fiction novel by English author H.G. Wells, presents itself as a factual account of a Martian invasion. Published in the late 1800's, it has spawned a number of films (including a 2005 Steven Spielberg movie with Tom Cruise), radio dramas, video games, and sequels by other authors.
The most (in)famous adaptation was by Orson Welles, who broadcast the story on Halloween, 1938, from New York City. Welles' dramatic delivery and news bulletin broadcast style announcing an alien invasion of Earth caused many to interpret the story as factual.
The result? Public hysteria.
